Multimedia Newsroom at SR
Digital Production Magazine takes a look at the Saarlaendischer Rundfunk project currently in testing phase.
The project delivered by Silex Media at Saarlaendischer Rundfunk (SR), a public broadcaster in southwestern Germany, is featured in the February edition of the German magazine Digital Production. It analyzes the workflow efficiency and cost saving benefits of having one newsroom that brings together radio, television, online and videotext departments.
SR, is the first broadcaster of the ARD family to create a multimedia Newsroom. The article describes not only the impact on the people using the system, but also the impact and choices made regarding technologies. The reuse of content requires the journalist to think and work in a multimedia way. The infrastructure set up enables the journalists to do just that.
The new production and transmission facility delivers a digital and file based infrastructure, which first introduced in SR's audio department now also brings together the television and other departments.
Silex Media's team of workflow experts was asked to analyze and then install this new Newsroom. The project integrates a heterogenous set of products, including Dalet, Ardendo SGI, Aveco and Avid editing systems. The video format selected by SR is IMX D10 (50Mbit/s).
Christian Ehrling, Silex Media's project manager, is quoted: "the difference between a classic studio environment and this one is the fact that material is treated as digital assets, not tape".
The German article is featured in the February 2007 edition and is available from the Digital Production website.
