New Hydrogen Products and Partnerships Announced at NAB 2007 Print E-mail

Positive response from customers and market at Silex Media's first anniversary celebration.

NAB Show - Las Vegas, April 15, 2007 - Silex Media, a leading digital workflow provider focusing on the Broadcast and Media market, has today confirmed that it will be using the NAB show in Las Vegas as a platform to announce both a series of new products and a number of new partnerships. In the past year, since its spin-off from SGI, the company has grown substantially and continues to benefit from positive customer and market feedback.

First announced in September 2006, The Silex Media Hydrogen framework is a middleware framework based on the EBU's recommended approach that enables broadcasters to bridge the gap between broadcast and IT by creating a digital workflow. This year, the company will use the NAB show to introduce three new products that form part of the Hydrogen portfolio. Available immediately, and announced separately, Silex Media will show its Hydrogen Media Accelerator (HMA); its Hydrogen Archive Catalyst (HAC) and its Hydrogen Lifecycle Management product (HLM). A demonstration of Hydrogen HLM will be available at the booth of SGI (SL4920).

"Industry feedback on these new offerings has been encouraging," said Stephan Schindler, CEO at Silex Media. "We've listened to customer demands and have worked closely with partners so we can research and develop solutions that the market needs today, and in the future, to remain competitive. We are confident that they will generate a lot of interest during the show and we look forward to a busy few days."

HMA increases the production workflow by enabling edit-while-ingest and server based editing, with freedom to choose the NLE. The HAC product provides transparent access to a hierarchical storage management digital tape based system, adding features like partial file restore (or retrieve) and the HLM solution allows broadcasters to create a complete Lifecycle Management system for production and archives which integrates with the entire enterprise, without customers being locked into one vendor or one solution.

Hydrogen is the result of the over 30 projects done at leading broadcasters. Danish Broadcasting Corporation uses Hydrogen Lifecycle Management, where the system manages 27,000 hours of DVCPro video, over 300,000 pieces of material. Every day the users make 50.000 requests to the Hydrogen system and transfer over 4,000 files.

Michael Harrit, Head of Enterprise Architecture & Strategy, says: "We have been very pleased with the quality and speed of production, with our creative staff able to gain immediate access to archived material and share video and sound content across all of our TV, radio, and online operations."

It is not only Silex Media's product suite that is increasing either; the company is intensifying the relationship with their tier one partners: Apple, Omneon Video Networks, OpenCube, Oracle, Quantum/Adic, SGI, SGI Japan and Sony. At this year's NAB each of these partners are ready to present the joint value proposition and host joint meetings and presentations.

"Our decision to work closely with our partners reflects our vision and focus to continue improving how we move forward with these key organizations," says Schindler. "By partnering we can expand our reach and understand their customer demands faster, helping us to continue delivering against what the market needs. For the customer it means an enhanced buying experience, with solutions that are even more integrated than before."

Whilst the Silex Media Hydrogen solution offers organisations a number of immediate and tangible benefits, combined with the value from its market leading partners the results that can be achieved are significant. Hydrogen often plays a critical role in the spectrum of a project, Silex Media understands that it can be enhanced by integrating it with other key components offered through its partner network. Each partner brings a specific area of expertise thus ensuring that the implementation is not only smooth, but that the customer also gets the fastest possible return on their investment.

Silex Media works with its key partners in the following ways:

  • Apple: Final Cut Pro, Apple's open standards based NLE, is supported by Silex Media's Hydrogen Media Accelerator;
  • Omneon Video Networks: using Spectrum video servers for ingest or playout and MediaGrid for central storage and processing help to deliver integrated digital workflows;
  • OpenCube: MXF experts that deliver software and interoperability capabilities enabling VTR like workflows and MXF gateways;
  • Oracle: world's largest enterprise software company, making the broadcasting environment enterprise aware;
  • Quantum/Adic: the leading global storage company specializing in backup, recovery and archive, taking full advantage of Silex Media Hydrogen Archive Catalyst;
  • SGI: leading provider of high-performance computing and storage solutions delivering digital content management solutions using Hydrogen software;
  • SGI Japan: spun-off from SGI in 2003 and 100% owner of Silex Media, active in Japan delivering solutions in the 'content oriented era';
  • Sony: combining Sony's broadcast expertise with Silex Media workflow expertise results in total broadcast workflows, the IT way.

With these new products and partnerships, combined with the Silex Media systems integration skills and support capabilities, the company feels confident it has a complete offering for today's broadcaster wishing to create cutting edge and reliable workflow solutions.
